We have used wooden mannequins to create dynamic poses and lamps as a light source to help project dramatic contrast onto their figures. Students were to show skills using 3 different mediums - firstly, high-quality colour pencil rendering, oil pastels and finally, acrylic paint. Lessons on each of these media helped to support the students in building up their knowledge and confidence before applying it to their artwork. Students also learned a lot about colour theory, especially looking at split-complementary and triadic colour schemes. They were encouraged to be bold with their contrast and to explore a range of mark making techniques in order to capture the textures of their chosen organic form. 2nd Group - Some beautiful pencil studies of natural forms, again showing excellent application of value as well as an interesting variety of compositions. Students were taught on the subject of composition and learned how to create interest with cropping, zooming in, off center positioning and using uniquely shaped paper for their artwork. 3rd Group - Acrylic studies, students were taught how to use mix colour and blend their paint. They also applied their knowledge on composition to help create a dynamic and lively outcome. Students were encouraged to showcase the intricate and unusual details of these drawings through experimentation with layout across their page. AFTER IMPRESSIONISM @ THE NATIONAL GALLERY As you can see in previous posts, I have been teaching Impressionism & Post Impressionism to my Year 7s recently, so I was very excited to visit the ‘After Impressionism: Inventing Modern Art’ exhibition at the National Gallery in London this summer. As I wandered around the walls were full of colour, texture and movement and I only wished I could have brought my students to visit from Thailand. They LOVED studying Impressionism & Post Impressionism and this would have been the perfect trip for them! The range of subject matter and use of experimental photography techniques was inspiring. Students looked at Andy Warhol and the impact of Pop Art in art history as well as how frequently we see Pop Art in TV, advertising, art and fashion today. We also discussed the history of mass-consumerism, its effects, relevance and impact on current society. I love this combination of traditional techniques, using a more natural media (historically done with wax and natural dyes - we used color inks) and the more bright, brash, plastic attention grabbing branding of the popular products seen and consumed every day in Thailand. Students first experimented with batik to create a range of backgrounds using a 3 layered wax technique to add depth to their designs. They collected and photographed their own objects, simplifying the image and editing them into a stencil ready for cutting out of thin acetate. The two were combined by carefully stenciling on their object using black paint using repetition inspired by Andy Warhol. METAMORPHISM - Year 9 - As part of their Surrealism project, Year 9s have produced some outstanding dry point etchings. On the theme of ‘metamorphism’ and inspired by illustrator Redmer Hokestra and artist Salvador Dali, students developed their own creature / object combinations using digital manipulation and ink drawing. Using acrylic sheets, the students carefully scratched out their etching with a variety of lines to create textures, and layers to create darker tones in their work. During the printing process students worked hard to perfect the process and amended their printing plates to create a more dynamic print if needed. Some students also played around with backgrounds as can be seen here in the puffer balloon. Final outcomes included a monoprinted self-portrait which students had to incorporate alongside their etching outcomes to create personal and characterful surreal artwork. BLOSSFELDT INSPIRED PHOTOGRAPHY Year 8 - To begin their Natural Forms project, Year 8 have been introduced to the striking photography of Karl Blossfeldt. Provided with a fascinating array of natural objects, students developed their photography and digital editing skills by being challenged to capture the dramatic details, textures and shapes of these objects on camera. Students also learned how to set up a a simple, yet effective, photographic ‘studio’ - stand (easel), black / white / grey paper, and a lamp. The students got a lot out of this task, they worked in small groups or pairs helping each other out with compositions, background decisions as well as lighting strength and angles. CORAL IN PAPER Year 8 - As part of their ‘Under the Sea’ project, students were given a homework challenge to further develop their sculptural skills. Using only paper, they were tasked to create a small section of a coral reef using a variety of paper manipulation techniques. The results were fantastic, some students had really gone to town creating multilayered colourful coralscapes with such intricate detail. They were tasked with trying to develop interesting textures, colours and forms that could be photographed close-up or in macro to begin working in a more abstract way. These images were then cropped, edited and turned into artworks using a variety of media including colour pencil, oil and acrylic paints. Mattison helped to bring an environmental awareness into the project and open the students eyes to the impact art can have in raising awareness for both local and global issues. This resulted in some interesting discussions on the topic of coral bleaching due to rising sea levels. After initial experimenting, reflecting and trouble shooting, the students began work on their A5 etching plate. They needed to make sure to incorporate a range of textures and values by using different tools such as nails, scratch board pens, sandpaper, electric etching tools and scouring pads. MAKING PAPER YEAR 7 - I have recently started a new after school club for Year 7s. I wanted to do something with an eco-minded theme. I decided on paper making - working in an art department we have lots of paper that is ready and waiting to be reused and recycled. This was the first session of actual paper making as during the first session the students helped me cut up recycled fabric (for soaking up water) and tear up paper that was then soaked and blended. The students loved the process and especially enjoyed adding colour with water based inks. These images are the results of a combination of both these. Under the theme of ‘Through the Window’ students planned and painted a personal Fauvist style painting. COLLAGRAPHS YEAR 8 - As part of their ‘Natural Forms’ project, Year 8s have been experimenting with creating and printing their own collagraphs. Using images of seedpods as their inspiration, they used card and thick paper to create a relief of their image. Students built their collagraphs up in layers, with the understanding that the upper layers would be those that take the most colour when printing. Students then added textured backgrounds using masking tape and pencil imprinting. The final step was printing their collagraphs onto a variety of backgrounds and experimenting with mixing and rolling colour printing inks. A combination of bubble wrap printing, tissue paper, watercolour and fine liner pens were used to create these pieces. Preparatory studies of natural forms were done - quick timed studies of shells & seedpods. MARK MAKING WITH BLOSSFELDT YEAR 8 - To kick start their ‘Natural Forms’ project, Year 8 have been ‘scribble drawing’ using the fascinating photography of artist Karl Blossfeldt as their references. This task was designed to introduce students to a range of mark making techniques and to develop their understanding of value and tone. After practicing their mark making, students went on to ‘scribble’ on tracing paper over a Blossfeldt image to pick out the strong contrasts and the intricate details of his beautiful close-up photos of the natural world. LUMPHINI RAIN - This afternoon my partner and I took the opportunity to get out and about as the parks are finally open! Due to the Covid situation here in Bangkok, parks have been closed since April time. Luckily, from behind our home, we have great access to both the main parks in Bangkok - Benjakitti Park and Lumphini Park - both full of tropical greenery and if you look hard enough, lots of wildlife too. After wondering along the Green Mile Walkway we arrived at Lumphini Park. No sooner than we had arrived into the midst of the park (as happens often at this time of year) the Monsoon heavens opened and completely drowned us. For Covid reasons, there was one only way in, and one way out of the park. Inspired by Artist Chuck Close, students tried fingerprint painting - just like you would do as a toddler - but using black ink and a lot more control. At first, the students struggled with this, their drawing tools were suddenly so much bigger and it was harder to produce detail. This a peaceful and green area where the water hyacinth-filled Tha Chin river flows through and visitors can stay right on the riverbanks to enjoy the cool breeze and stunning sunrises and sunsets. Just down the road from where we stayed, we stumbled upon a HUGE museum - Woodland Museum - and inside we found an impressive collection wooden sculptures and carvings that were once the private collection of the Thewphaingarm family. The museum takes you on a tour around the religions and cultures of South East Asia through wooden sculpture and is set in a beautiful garden right on the Tha Chin river. I thought it would be a good idea to start with a study of her work, so to get them used to the idea of collaging, we began with paper first - and what a better way to do it than creating our own colour papers to use! Students worked collaboratively as a table to create a selection of papers in tones selected from Elaine O’Neil’s artworks. These were added to a sharing table so students could select the colour papers they needed for their own pastiche. Using a variety of mark making tools and acrylic paints on different papers the students had great fun experimenting with colour mixing and creating their own art materials. This area is seeped in Chinese history, which you can see all around you when wandering around. At the moment, there is a city wide Art Biennale, titled ‘Escape Routes’ featuring Artists from the world over. To see some of the work, I made my way to Lhong 1919, an area of reclaimed Chinese warehouses. These are some of my photos from the day, I was particularly taken by the preserved paintings on the walls, such as this great little bird photographed here. In the Biennale, I was intrigued by the work of Bangladeshi Artist - Farhana Islam Tani - whose work focuses on gender equality.
